“I am a strategist — I get to the bottom of the issue without being distracted. I then immediately search for the solution. Clients feel confident they can come to me. I get to the bottom of the issue, keep focus and know where we’re going. We’ll get a result.”
Few people know the California construction industry as intimately as founding partner Frank Lanak. Having focused on construction law and sureties for over three decades, first in Los Angeles and then in Orange County, Frank knows how to work every angle to provide no-nonsense, business-smart solutions to his clients. An expert in the area of sureties, Frank Lanak’s depth of knowledge and vast experience of construction law has earned him the highest rating from Martindale Hubbell for sureties, construction law, commercial collections, real property and creditors’ rights.
Frank was a seasoned litigator with significant courtroom experience as a public defender under his belt when he struck out as a sole practitioner. Initially practicing in general civil matters, he eventually shifted his focus to construction and surety law. Joined by Joseph Hanna, Frank established Lanak & Hanna in 1978. They have since grown the firm into one of the top construction law practices in California — a fact demonstrated by the number of clients who are repeat business, some having first walked through the firm’s doors when they opened over 30 years ago.
Frank represents general contractors, subcontractors in a host of construction matters, including enforcement of job rights, collections, as well as sureties in contested claims on performance and payment bonds. His expertise also extends to significant work in property and debt issues arising in related real estate, probate, divorce, bankruptcy, workers’ compensation, commercial transaction and personal injury claims.
Frank edits the firm’s periodic newsletter, dealing with construction issues and recent decisions, and has also lectured on surety law issues for industry events, such as a recent surety agents seminar hosted by one of the firm’s surety clients, a presentation to the local surety claims association and as an instructor on bond forms for a surety association. He is also Lanak & Hanna’s marketing partner, leading and guiding the firm in business development and IT.
Frank and Daria have been married for 45 years, living in the same home since 1979, where they raised two kids in a successful joint effort. Their son is also a lawyer and Senior Vice President of a national surety company, and their daughter, who earned her MBA at Chapman University, is busily raising two children.
