Clients ask me, what can I do to put on a good case? So here are three tips to putting on a good case.
Number one, show up. I cannot tell you how important it is for you to be physically present throughout the entirety of your case, especially jury trials. Think about it. You’re asking a jury to take days, possibly weeks out of their life to listen to your case. The least you can do is show the same level of respect by being there. And it’s also important to have the person with knowledge of the case to be there. I cannot tell you how often it is the case, particularly on the other side, involving corporate clients, when the real decision maker is not there, they send some lackey who does know anything about the case to sit there. And it’s not a good thing. Juries and judges will see through that.
Number two, look the part. What do I mean by that? If you wear boots to work, wear boots to trial. If you wear company attire to work, wear company attire to trial. However, if you do not wear a three piece suit to work, do not wear a three piece suit to trial, juries and judges will see through that, and you don’t want to come across as someone who is pretending or putting on an act.
And finally, most importantly, be yourself. If you’re passionate and loud and energetic, that’s okay. Show your passion. Juries will appreciate that on the other end, if you’re soft spoken, that’s okay too, but tell the judge and the jury what happened. Tell them your story. After all, this is your one opportunity to explain to the jury and the judge why you should win your case, and with those three tips, you’ll be well on your way to putting on a good case.
