Attorneys Michael Murray and Sunny Lee recently obtained a summary judgment against former NBA All Star and current President of the South Sudan Basketball Federation Luol Deng. The case arose from a dispute over a development project in New York. When the project’s construction manager was not paid, the construction manager recorded a mechanics lien. Lanak & Hanna’s surety client executed a lien release bond. In exchange for the surety’s execution of the bond, Deng and others agreed to personally indemnify and reimburse the surety from any losses the surety incurred. The construction manager settled is mechanics lien claim with the surety, but despite his promise to indemnify and reimburse the surety, Deng refused. Lanak & Hanna, on behalf of the surety filed a lawsuit to recover amounts owed to the surety. When repeated attempts to reach a resolution failed, Lanak & Hanna was left with no choice but to file a summary judgment motion. In February, the Court granted the summary judgment motion for the full amount owed to the surety.
